History of the Ukrainian American Society of Daytona Beach
A Ukrainian American club of Daytona Beach, Florida was organized informally in May 1979.
The association acted as a civic, cultural and social group for the area's Ukrainian Community.
The group was formally incorporated on April 23, 1986 as the Ukrainian American Society of Daytona Beach and Vicinity, Inc.
The Society sought to build a Meeting House for its members.
Land was eventually purchased at 1328 Hurst Street with plans to build a center.
The Ukrainian American Cultural Center was constructed, and occupancy was finalized in April 1995.
The Society hosts social events on a monthly basis, to foster a spirit of camaraderie and fellowship among the club's members, as well as to generate funds to repay the mortgage on the Cultural Center.
The club hosts social gatherings to mark Taras Shevchenko's birthday, Ukrainian Independence Day, Christmas and Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving, and other holidays.
The Ladies Committee works diligently to organize and cook various traditional Ukrainian foods (varenyky-pyrohy, holubtsi, kapusta, borshch) for the club events.
The Society has also hosted or arranged local cultural performances by Ukrainian artists, such as the "Lvivyany," the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, the Ukrainian Dancers of Central Florida, "Dyvotsvit," and other performers.
In December 1999, the Ukrainian American Society commemorated its 20th anniversary of formation.
